Richard III is a dark and brooding play about deception, subterfuge,
politicking, and betrayal, culminating in the battle to defeat Richard,
who successfully usurps the throne of England with his schemes. The set
contained three large monlithic stone-like pieces, which tracked on and
off stage to many positions, and some flying pieces, which were
grate-like, and enhanced the sense of confinement and prison which was
sometimes desired. The lighting underscored this by repeating the texture
of bars on the floor with templates, and by featuring a fairly
monochromatic palette in the stagelight. On the background, more variety
of color was used, but it still had a reasonably muted feeling.
