Zarchan
A Letter from Paul and Louis Zarchan
.....On May 19, 1997, I received a forwarded email from Don Mopsick from a Paul Zarchan. Don had found a Zarchin on a death certificate and we met through the Jewishgen web site. Since he is involved in many genealogical endeavors and I have living relatives with the surname of Zarchin, he has allowed me to spearhead this venture.
.....Paul and I exchanged many emails and finally, he spoke with his dad about writing down his family history. You see, the fact that they spell their name a bit differently was done in America. Paul said the "a" made it fancier.
.....I have been given permission by the Zarchans to post the information sent to me and I feel the best way is to just type in the actual letter. Here it is:
Dear Paul,
.....I'm sending you all the information I have in response to Amy Waldinger's request.
.....My father, Israel Zarchin, spelled [in Hebrew] was born in 1879 in the town of STARADEROV which was near BABROISK in the province of MINSK.
.....He married my mother Sarah Chiena Bass. They had four children in Europe. My mother came from a town called SHIDRIN. My oldest sibling was a sister, Shima (SOPHIE), born in 1908. She died in New York in 1926. My brother, Harry (TSVI HERSH) was born in 1910 and died in 1989. My brother Philip was born in 1912 and died in 1988. My other brother was born in Europe and died as a young child of about 4 or 5 in Europe.
.....These dates I got from their passports. I think that the ages of my brothers and sister were stated as 2 years younger than they were.
.....My father, Israel, son of Ephraim Reuvin, came to the U.S. in 1913 in order not to be drafted into the Russian Army. He had two sisters in the U.S.:
.....Ida Koff, who came to the U.S. before my father and helped bring him over. He also had a sister, Bunye in the U.S., but I don't remember much about her. I know that he left brothers in Russia.
.....My father could not bring my mother and his children over until the end of 1922, The First World War and the Russian Revolution had intervened.
.....My mother Sarah arrived in New York with her three children in Dec. of 1922. They lived on the Lower East Side. of New York at 116 Monroe St. I was born at 133 Monroe St. in Feb. of 1924.
.....Unfortunately I don't know much of our family history. My brother Harry was our family historian. He and his siblings lived through some terrible times between the years 1913 to 1922. My parents both died in 1952.
Love,
Dad
Louis Zarchan
