Avram Zarchin

My great- grandfather, Abram Zarchin was from Osipovichi, Belarus. This is about 30 miles outside of Bobruysk. He married Elka there, and together they had seven children who lived to adulthood. For some reason, and I am sure it will be revealed sometime in the near future, he decided that it was imperative that his family had to leave the country. At this time, I only know the emigration routes of Abram and Moises, who was my grandfather. Abram went to Vilna, Warsaw, Poland to apply for a visa in 1922. One was granted in May of 1923 and so began the journey to America. He resided in Havana, Cuba for several years with four of his children: Moises, Hillel, Sonia and Tiba. Sigmund, Chaim, and Ida went directly to the United States. I am not sure whether or not he was ever naturalized.

He arrived from Cuba aboard the SS Orizaba into New York Harbor at age 57 on December 13, 1924. He travelled with Leika Gasman, then 20, who was a friend of my grandfather, Moishe. He went to My Uncle Hymie who lived on 2063- 3rd Ave. in New York City.
I was able to obtain his death certificate. We were all quite surprised to learn that his wife was listed as Sarah. My mother only remembers that she was a "wicked witch", had two kids: Chachie and some boy and had everyone call her "The Mumkeh". This was not a term of endearment. It is a Yiddish word meaning "Expert". He resided at 1516 Charlotte Ave. in the Bronx and was a finisher of carriages. His parents' names (in English) were Judah Zarchin and Reba Plotkin Zarchin. He died May 22, 1945 and is buried at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY.
