War Is Over - Lincoln ShotWell, the WAR is over. The news came four days after the SURRENDER. We were roasting our usual ALLIGATOR, since our supply lines seem to have forgotten us. There wasn't as much celebration as bewilderment that we had surviced this four year HELL. As a cold Spring ran irritated us, we thought deeply of what we had done and what the future bid for us. Then we heard that LINCOLN was gone. Shot was the RUMOR. Why not? With so many bullets flying over these last few years, I'm not surprised. All of us had been hit once or twice but not as FATALLY as HE got. Would HIS rules, that we fought for? be thrown away? Would the EX-SLAVES, that we freed, be able to start new lives with so little? Would we? I don't know, but I can't keep this image from my eyes of them FLOATING, as if in a fog bank, neither EARTH nor SKY to direct them. I don't know, it's all so confusing. But I stil HOPE. We were bone tired. Original Art Copyright © 1996 - 2012 Conrad Vogel All Rights Reserved |
