Hartford Connecticut Mystery Gull
These photos (video grabs) were taken by Patrick in mid October at the Manchester landfill, just east of Hartford CT. Observers were
immediately struck by the well-defined tail band, thick black bill, pale head,
pale inner primary window, lack of dark bases to the secondary coverts and the
long-winged look.
The latter rules out Lesser Black-backed Gull. It may well be a Yellow-legged Gull L. cachinnans michahellis.
There is a discussion of this bird on the responses page (under "Possible First Year Yellow-legged Gull in Connecticut").
