On the original, one can see the rounded primary tips of a second year bird. Note here the white primary tips, and the modest primary extension. Also note the brownish tertials extensively fringed with white.
Note the massive bill with little or no gonys bulge, the underwing, and the overall jizz.
The wings and rump speak for themselves. Go to the Thayer's page and look at the first two shots there for some images of second winter Herrings taken on the same trip.
The tail looks slightly too black here. A careful count shows that we are not seeing the outer two tail feathers. On the original, a small amount of white is visible at the upper end of the outer tail feather.
