Photo L2 - Slaty-backed Gulls mixed age group. Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan 27 Nov 1998 (Features and ad. Glaucous Gull. The bird on the far left is NOT a Vega Gull.)
Photo M - SBGU 2nd winter? Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan 29 Nov 1998 (Very pale individual, but not GWGU due to pale eye?) The color of the secondaries seem too solid colored for GWGU, and more like most of the SBGUs we saw. This was one of the oddest gulls we saw on the trip.

Photo O - SBGU 1st winter. Nemuro, Hokkado, Japan 27 Nov 1998.
Photo P - SBGU 1st winter. Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan 27 Nov 1998. (in flight)
Photo Q - SBGU 1st winter. Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan 28 Nov 1998 (head turned away). Head looks unusually pale for a 1st winter, but this bird does fall at the pale end of what we considered 1st winter birds.
Photo R - SBGU 1st summer(?). Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan 29 Nov 1998. This is the same individual as in Photos S and T.
Photo U - SBGU 2nd winter. Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan 29 Nov 1998.

Photo W - SBGU 3rd winter. Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan 28 Nov 1998
Of the 4000 - 5000 SBGUs we saw on Hokkaido, about 40% were adults, 50%
were 1st winter, about 2% were 2nd winter, and about 8% were 3rd winter.
