Herring Gull Wings
Reference is often made to adult Herring Gulls' wing pattern when discussing other species. Europeans may not have easy access to images of smithsonianus. Then too, it has come to my attention recently that there may be geographic variation within North America in this wing pattern. So here are some shots, all taken for other purposes, that show Herring Gull wing patterns. The first three were taken at Hatteras.

Quiz: what bird was I concentrating on when I took this shot?
Molt. October 11, 1998, Orient Point, New York. Three birds are in the picture.
Molt. October 11, 1998, Orient Point, New York. In my experience, this is a very typical pattern for P5, P6, P7, and P8 for smithsonianus Herring Gull. P9 and P10 are just coming in, as is P4.
