Voice

Today at the university gym I was again lost
in the haunting of all I had done wrong.
And I began to wonder what the score was on me –
accomplishments versus failures.
But, worst of all, after I swam in the pool,
I didn’t know what I wanted to do next.
I planned to run around the reservoir,
but I couldn’t decide.
I heard a voice within say,
“Stay. Stay. Linger here.
Run here.
Unwind on the machines here.
Use the sauna.
Take a hot shower.”
When I ran on the track,
my right knee hurt,
and the voice said,
“Run on the treadmill – save your knee.”
And I did
and all my troubles were forgotten.
