Men

Ajax Cleaners

The next night we hired a group of freed slaves known as Ajax Cleaners. What they normally do is tidy up the battlefield after a battle. They return guns, equipment and bodies back to the regrouped units. This night they were to bring our sunken friends to the surface of the swamp. You see, most of us can't swim and those that really couldn't swim just sank out of sight. Ajax Cleaners were the people to get them back. And sure enough they did. But they did it in such strange ways. Just before the Moon rose, they climbed into the trees around the swamp. They began to sing strange and beautiful songs, something like hymns. Slowly the Moon appeared in the water. And the Moon looked like it was smiling. The men began to sing louder and louder. In an instant, three or four bodies appeared on the surface. It worked. Everybody was thoroughly satisfied that their dead friends could be buried.
