Below is a view of the mast step on La Saladita, commander #92.  It is the original plywood step (shown here with blue masking tape around it on the deck.)

Next image, below, is the drawing of the mast step from the Ariel/Commander Association's Owner's Manual and Maintenance Guide.

Here we have an example of a vang installation with bails on an Ariel.  Looks good, but these bails require a compression bushing inside the spar, and that is what I am trying to avoid, at least temporarily.
