On the morning we arrived in Kyangjin Gompa, Nepal, an earthquake hit the mountains. In the afternoon, as we stood atop a viewpoint mugging for victory photographs, we heard a sound like distant thunder. Across the valley on Langtang Lirung, we witnessed this rare avalanche.

To give you an idea of the size of it, that peak is 7245 meters tall (Everest is 8848). On the other side is Tibet.

No one was hurt.
